At Basements Plus, building has always been about more than walls, floors, and finished spaces. It’s about people. It’s about comfort. And sometimes, it’s about having a home that works for you.
Recently, our team had the privilege of helping a family living with ALS. The project focused on widening doorways and modifying key areas of the home so a wheelchair could move freely and safely throughout the space. Basements Plus and the Mitchell Leland Shaver Foundation teamed up to complete this renovation at no cost to the homeowner, and because helping families live with dignity and comfort is at the heart of why we do this.
ALS is deeply personal to us.
In 2014, Mitch Shaver joined Basements Plus as our Sales Manager. It didn’t take long for him to become an integral part of the company, eventually stepping into the role of General Manager. Mitch was a true co-pilot during some of our most significant years of growth, a leader, a mentor, and a friend, especially to Steve and Amy Iverson.
For years, we had talked internally about wanting to support a cause that truly meant something to us. In the past, we donated to charities and sponsored events, but there wasn’t a strong personal connection. That changed in 2018, when ALS entered our lives in a very personal way.
Mitch was diagnosed with ALS, and in true Mitch fashion, he immediately focused on helping others. His determination to make a difference led to the creation of the Mitchell Leland Shaver Foundation.
Through this Foundation, Basements Plus donates funds, but more importantly, our team donates time, skills, and heart.
We oversee home improvement projects for families affected by ALS, projects that make everyday life safer, more accessible, and more comfortable. The same craftsmanship and care we bring to finishing basements is now being used to help families navigate incredibly difficult circumstances.
These projects aren’t just renovations. They’re about preserving independence, easing daily challenges, and providing peace of mind during an overwhelming journey.
We’re building comfort. We’re building hope. And we’re building a legacy. One that Mitch helped lay the foundation for.
This recent project is a perfect example of what the Mitchell Leland Shaver Foundation stands for. Our crews worked together to widen doorways and improve accessibility throughout the home, ensuring the homeowner could move through their space with greater ease and safety.
Seeing our team and Iverson’s Lumber come together volunteering their time and material for a family in need is a reminder of what makes Basements Plus special. It’s not just what we build, but why we build it.
